What is Airway Focused Orthodontics?
Hi, Dr Wendy Wang here from Oralux Dental in both Crowns Nest and Bella Vista. I just finished up with little Sam and his mum from Willoughby. Sam is seven and his mum brought him in for his orthodontic assessment. When I started explaining Airway-focused orthodontics, his mum has never heard of that before, and she was surprised how informative and important it is. So I decided to make a quick video sharing with you what I shared with them.
So airway and growth-focused orthodontics is an integrative orthodontic philosophy, where we look at the children from a young age of their overall health and airway, not just their teeth. As studies now show that nine out of 10 kids will show some airway obstruction related symptoms this includes snoring, mouth opening, bedwetting, ADHD, etc.
With all these symptoms, usually, nobody really takes care of them or look at the cause of them. So when the dentist sees the child, we are the gatekeepers of their airways. We are the best person to make the initial assessment for them.
With airway-focused orthodontics, we try to identify the problems early on and help the kids eliminate these problems. As a result, they have a better-shaped face, better-developed airway and better-developed jawbones. This, in turn, can benefit the child from later on needing complex, lengthy and expensive orthodontic treatment.
So children by the age of seven should start having orthodontic assessments. And when I say orthodontic assessment, what I mean is airway-focused orthodontic assessment. This way, other than their teeth, they will also have an assessment on how they breathe, their airway and their jawbones, how the growth pattern is like to make sure future problems are minimised.
So if your child is over the age of seven and you are now considering an orthodontic assessment for them, why not book them in with us here at Oralux Dental.
