Signs And Symptoms That I Need A Root Canal Therapy
Hi, it’s Dr Wendy here from Oralux Dental. Today, I’m going to explain what root canal treatment is and what the signs and symptoms are that you should look out for.
Every tooth has a core in the middle called the dental pulp, which contains blood vessels and nerves. If bacteria gets into that core, then the pulp may become inflamed, infected or even die off, then a root canal therapy is needed to save the tooth.
A root canal treatment is basically like cleaning a bottle with a bottle brush. We want to clear out all the bacterias and then fill the empty root space back up to prevent any new bacteria from getting in there again.
So what are the signs that you should look out for if your tooth needs a root canal therapy?
The infected or inflamed pulp may be caused by a broken or cracked tooth, a very deep cavity, trauma, gum diseases, or even extensive dental work done on the tooth. That in turn usually causes constant pain, sensitivity to hot and cold, tooth discolouration and the swelling and of the gum. Sometimes one can even see pus draining through a pimple like opening in the gum. So if you have any of those symptoms, it’s often best to check with your dentist to see if any treatment is required.
You may be thinking that root canal can be so painful. Well, a root canal treatment may sound scary, but with today’s technology and local anesthetics, the experience is typically similar to a filling session that takes slightly longer time. There’s little to minimal discomfort because the dentist will use local anesthetics to numb the tooth and the gum, so you will be comfortable during the procedure.
I hope this video gives you a better understanding of root canal therapy, and signs you might need one. Not all pain, sensitivity or discomfort requires a root canal treatment, so it is best to have it assessed by a dentist. If you are experiencing these symptoms, we would love to look after you.
