Importance Of Tooth Structure Preservation In Doing Dental Veneers

Hi, it’s Dr Wendy here from Oralux Dental. I just saw a new patient Emily from Mosman, and said to me, Hey Wendy, I saw on Instagram a dental practice placing porcelain veneers over someone’s teeth, and looks like they filed a lot down, is that normal?

So I thought I’ll make a video explaining the importance of tooth structure preservation in doing dental veneers.
Here at Oralux Dental, our philosophy is we like to keep the natural tooth as much as possible. Everybody likes their healthy tooth, and nobody likes to have their own natural tooth cut. So preservation of your own tooth is super, super important. In other words, we’re trying to be very conservative with the natural tooth and allowing veneer simply lay on top of the natural tooth to do what it’s supposed to do, whether it’s changing the shape or the colour of your tooth.
Secondly, the bonding strength of the veneer is at its maximum when you have a natural tooth or natural enamel left on the tooth, hence we’re trying to be very conservative and not cutting too much of the natural enamel away. And certainly, in terms of long-term maintenance of the tooth, if anything happens, for example, by accident to the veneers, you will still have the foundation of the veneer, which is the natural tooth. So you don’t want to jump in to cut away a lot of teeth, so that way to maintain the veneers is an easy job for both the patient and clinician.
I hope this gives you a better understanding of the importance of tooth structure preservation in doing porcelain veneers and our philosophy here at Oralux Dental.

I had my first visit here for a cleaning along with my two little boys, and it was a great experience. Very clean and professional. Barsha was great with the kids even though it was the little one’s first time. Looking forward to our next check-up! (Well maybe not “looking forward” to going to the dentist, but not dreading it at least…)
