So what is a mock-up? It is basically transferring that 3D design into a physical 3D printed model. And that can in turn be translated into temporary teeth shells go onto the patient’s teeth. The patient will be able to wear these temporary teeth, and practice talking with it and smile with it. We actually do this for all of our patients with multiple teeth upgrade because nothing beats seeing your new smile mocked up inside your own mouth.

The patient can talk in front of our camera and see whether the teeth fit well with their lips. Was anything catching the lips? Does the tongue feel comfortable? So by creating a mock-up, we can bring the digital smile design to real life.

The ability to make adjustments in digital smile design makes it superior, efficient and simpler compared to changing your final products. I remember one of our patients Jane from St Leonards, she had her veneers for more than 20 years, and she needed a new set of veneers done because a couple was chipped off. We used digital smile design for her, and we tried it in her mouth. Then we did some subtle finessing on the mockup. She just went: Wow! I didn’t know you could change it so quickly and easily. She said, when I had my old veneers done 20 years ago, my dentist had to trim all this porcelains because I didn’t like the length of it. And he took about half a day to complete all of them in-chair with my mouth open. Nowadays it takes only 45 minutes for all of your front teeth and bottom teeth done because we’ve got this beautiful technology to efficiently translate your smile and to modify that chairside very easily.

I have seen a lot of times the patient had some veneers done using the traditional method, and in the end, they were not 100% happy with it. They said, if I knew it was going to turn out like this, I would have done it differently. By utilising digital smile design, it is like having an architect’s blueprint.
