She chipped her tooth by accident and she came to our Bella Vista clinic right away. After evaluating her situation we decided a dental crown would be the best solution for her. Emma said to me, Wendy, I’ve never heard of a dental crown, what is it… how does it work?

Even though it is one of our most common procedures, I realised there are still a lot of people who are not familiar with it, so I decided to make this quick video explaining what a dental crown is and the treatment process. 

First of all, what is a dental crown? Well, even though it is called a Crown, it is actually a jargon term. In reality, they look a little bit like a cap that sits on top of a tooth. What this cap is doing is basically holding the underlying tooth together to prevent the fracture or breaking of the tooth.

So when a tooth is compromised in terms of its structure. For example, you had very large filling for a long time or corner of the tooth is already fractured, you need something really durable and strong to hold the rest of the tooth structure together. That’s where the dental crown comes in.

A dental crown can come in different forms, different materials, and each of the material comes with its own advantages and disadvantages. By having a professional experienced dentist to thoroughly assess your tooth, they will evaluate the situation and help you choose the most appropriate material for your dental crown. 

Now, the treatment process of a dental crown is super simple and easy these days. What we do here at Oralux Dental is, first of all, have a discussion of what’s the best material and options you have in terms of the crown. After that, we will prepare the tooth or reshape the tooth slightly under local anaesthetics, So you won’t feel any pain. 

Then you will have a temporary crown sitting on top of the tooth by the end of the procedure. This ensures your tooth is well protected while we are getting your permanent crown made. 

Your crown will be made by our laboratory by our best technicians. This normally takes between 48 to 72 hours. During this time, all the material is sourced from the best supplier in Australia to make sure the quality of the crown is at the best possible level. Our technician will handcraft your crown to ensure it fits perfectly and comfortably inside your mouth.

When you come back after a couple of days, we will remove the temporary crown. Then we will cement or glue the permanent crown to the tooth. It will fit perfectly and give the tooth a new life.
