What is Sleep Dentistry and its Benefits?
Anxious about an upcoming major dental treatment? Well, sleep dentistry could just be the answer you are looking for!
Hi, my name is Dr Wendy Wang from Oralux Dental. We received a big box of chocolates from one of our patients Jenny from Cremone this morning, it was so cute and so sweet of her.
And she said to me, Wendy, thank you so much for providing the sleep dentistry, and without this, I wouldn’t be able to take that tooth out. And I thought… this is not the first time we had such lovely patients giving us good feedback on the sleep dentistry, yet, so many people don’t know it’s an option available to them, so I thought it’s worthwhile making this video explaining what sleep dentistry is.
So what is sleep dentistry? Sleep dentistry is when a dentist carries out dental treatments while you will be put to sleep. Now there are different levels of sleep. So we’re talking about sedation. With most of the dental services that are carried out in the dental surgery can be done under sedation.
So sedation involves putting a little bit of medication through your blood vessels and they make you very drowsy, almost to the stage where you’re half asleep. And when the dental treatment is carried out, you’re not fully aware of what’s happening in the surrounding. However, you’re still breathing on your own. This is the most important difference between sedation versus general anaesthetics, which some people referred to being knocked out.
With general anaesthetics, you’re not breathing on your own, you reply on a ventilation machine or a breathing machine to help you breathe.
With most of the dental procedures, they can be carried out quite pleasantly just with sedation. So when you get to the stage where you’re really relaxed, very sleepy, very drowsy, the dentist can perform the dental procedure. And when you wake up, you don’t really have any recollection of what has happened in the dental chair.
This is a great advantage for people who have dental fears, who doesn’t like needles or the procedure resolved is quite difficult or quite lengthy. Having sedation just helps take the fear and the stress out of the whole picture. And before you know it, it’s all done, and you don’t have any memories of it!
Our patients often love sedation or sleep dentistry for procedures like wisdom teeth extraction, multiple implant placement, or simply for any long procedures. They simply have a good nap and when she or he wakes up, everything’s done.
Sleep dentistry is really common and routinely carried out here in Oralux Dental. We have a dual qualified dentist as well as sedation doctor to come onsite and everything’s taken care of for you, whilst our dentist can provide the dental services and focus on the work to make sure everything is done to the best possible quality.
Well, I hope this episode helps you to understand more about sleep dentistry and opens another door for you to become relaxed and easy in the dental chair.
