Got a missing tooth and worried about the pain associated with a dental implant?

Hi! I’m Dr Wendy Wang from Oralux Dental. Yesterday our front desk was checking up on one of our nervous patient Stacey from Castle Hill, who just had a dental implant placed the day before. Stacey sent a message back to me saying how easy she felt, and she actually forced herself to take a Panadol because she was afraid of pain, but that was the only pill she took because she didn’t need anything else after that.

So this topic came into my mind because so many patients always anticipate the pain and discomfort associated with dental implant surgery. So I thought it might be a good idea to share the actual steps of the dental implant procedure with you so you can have more confidence and feel easier going through the procedure.

Basically, a dental implant can be easily done in step one, two, and three.

Preparation of the Dental Implant

So we take a good history of your health, take some nice photos and a 3D replica of your mouth scan. So we can prepare how the implant is going to go into the mouth in a virtual space, which is using a computer-guided technology.

So all that guesswork of where the implant should go, what we shouldn’t be touching. All of that is performed, calculated and pre-evaluated in the computer software. All you need to do is to relax in the chair, and let the clinician take some photos and take some scans, similar to an ultra-sound process. So that’s super simple and easy to do and takes about five to ten minutes to finish.

Placing the Implant into the Jaw

When all the backstage work has been prepared, a little key template, which we call a surgical template is printed out. That carries all the information for the clinician to know where the implant should be.

So we fixed that template onto the teeth. We will just place the implant and sometimes even without the need to cut into the gum, and basically, just do a pinhole drill into the bone to place the implant. So that’s what we call a surgical placement of dental implants.

Final Tooth Attachment

Now, after the surgery, we will usually review the wound healing and everything after two weeks, make sure everything has settled down. There’s no infection, minimal discomfort, and you feel good after surgery as well.

And after four to six months, which is the healing period of the implant, we will put the final tooth that’s going to be attached to the implant. So the implant during this four to six months will heal very nicely. It will become settled and stabilised in the bone, and that’s when we connect the final tooth to the implant after that time.

So let me repeat… Step one is always the preparation and backstage planning all the surgery. Step two very noninvasively place the implant into the jaw. Very often it is just a keyhole surgery.

Number three is once the implant is healed we would put the final tooth to connect to the implant.

So these steps are quite simple and standard for the patients who need one or two implants with good solid healthy bone.

Hopefully, I have given you more insights into the dental implant procedure. I had my first visit here for a cleaning along with my two little boys, and it was a great experience. Very clean and professional. Barsha was great with the kids even though it was the little one’s first time. Looking forward to our next check-up! (Well maybe not “looking forward” to going to the dentist, but not dreading it at least…)
