Dental Crowns

Dental Crown and Bridge Sydney, Crows Nest & Bella Vista

Sometimes a damaged or decayed tooth needs extra reinforcement. Our team at Oralux Dental is ready to help repair your tooth and save it as best we can. We use dental crowns with the latest technology and materials to repair and reinforce your tooth to help restore your smile.

Dental crowns are used to strengthen a tooth if decay has overtaken or if a large amount of a tooth is deteriorated. Much like a cap, a dental crown is a natural-looking tooth-shaped restoration that can save what is left of the tooth, so you can enjoy full function of your teeth while looking great at the same time.

Dental crowns are used in a variety of situations including the following:

Z
To cover a dental implant
Z
Restore broken or damaged teeth
Z
Support tooth weakened by a large cavity
Z
To cap and protect a tooth after a root canal
Z
Restore the appearance of misshapen or discoloured teeth
Each person is different, so our team here at Oralux Dental is ready to explain all the options with you. You will learn the pros and cons of each option so you can decide which is best for you. We want all our patients to be happy, so will work with you until you get the satisfaction you deserve.

The Dental Crown Procedure

The process to get a dental crown is usually done in two office visits.

During the first visit, your dentist will do a complete examination to ensure the tooth can support a crown
Your tooth will be fitted and prepared for the crown
You will receive a temporary replacement while the permanent crown is made
The crown will be fitted and placed during your second visit

Dental Crown After Root Canal Treatment

Sometimes a tooth may have extensive damage and need a root canal treatment. When left untreated, decay can travel down into the tooth root, causing a great deal of discomfort and pain. Our professionals are experienced dentists who will help you get rid of pain and treat the infection.

We will do a full evaluation and examination with x-rays that will allow us to see where the decay is and the extent of it. We can provide a local anesthetic to quickly bring relief and then get to work. The root canal process will be performed and then protect it with a dental crown.

Steps for Root Canal:

Gain access to the center of the tooth
Clean and medicate
Cleanse away infection and bacteria
Add root filling

Naturally Looking Dental Crowns

Today’s dental crowns are very resilient and durable. But the best part is they look like your natural teeth. They fit over your natural tooth and protect the root while maintaining the integrity of your bite. This means more comfort and function without worry. But crowns provide more than comfort, they look great, too.

The material used in today’s crowns include resin, ceramic, porcelain and even gold, if the patient desires. Some people still prefer gold for the look or its softness, hoping for more comfort. But ceramic and porcelain crowns are also fit for the best comfort and function available, and they look like your natural tooth. Our dental professionals will choose the right colour so only you will know it is not your natural tooth.

If you require multiple crowns, we can do that, too. While the placement of more than one dental crown is normal, we may suggest a bridge if more than one in the same row is needed. Dental restorations are as individual as you are, and our dentists will provide all the information you need to make the best decision for your situation.

How Long Will a New Dental Crown Last?

Dental crowns and restorations are highly durable, often lasting for 20 or more years. But each situation is different and so will depend on the foundation of the original tooth, the dental material you choose for your crown and how well you maintain it.

When taken care of, dental crowns are made to last and can be treated as a natural tooth. And just like a natural tooth, the better you care for your crown the longer it will remain, but there are other things that you can do to help.

Of course, daily maintenance is imperative. Schedule regular dental visits to ensure all is well and help you avoid future problems or identify any issues that may be starting. Be sure to make an appointment for an exam if your crown feels loose, if you feel pain, or if your bite feels different.

On average, dental crowns may last from 10 to 15 years, but as mentioned, each situation is different, and it is not uncommon for them to last longer. Taking care of problems before they arise or at the beginning stages means the problem will more easily be addressed while keeping the cost down.

How to Care for Your Dental Crown

Daily brushing and routine maintenance will help any dental restoration last a long time. Once your dental work is complete, your dentist and hygienist will go over any special instructions with you. Maintenance of your new dental crown may include:

Brush daily after each meal
Schedule regular dental visits and cleanings
Floss according to your dentist’s instructions
Avoid really hard food that may break your tooth and/or crown
Use any special mouthwash your dentist or hygienist may recommend
