Extrinsic vs. Intrinsic Staining
Extrinsic staining refers to staining remaining at superficial layer of the teeth. It often comes down to environmental factors such as smoking, eating tannin-rich foods or having poor oral health, which adversely stains the enamel. This can lead to various issues, such as:
Intrinsic staining refers to stains that penetrate into the deeper layers of the teeth that can’t be removed with mechanical measures. The Process
In short, the process of whitening teeth generally includes using hydrogen peroxide (found in most whitening medications). This chemical breaks down the stain molecules and remove them from the teeth. Hence overall brighter, whiter smile.
By determining why your teeth are discoloured (intrinsic, extrinsic or both), your dentist can then work out how long your teeth need to be exposed to the bleaching compound and what concentration of medication is needed to achieve your best desired result. Therefore, we recommend visiting your dentist first, to get the best outcome.
Risk Factors
During your consultation, an Oralux dentist will ensure your teeth and gums are healthy. If you have any gum disease, root exposure or worn out enamel, having a whitening treatment may cause over-sensitivity and irreversible damage, which is why having a dentist check your oral health before commencing treatment is wise. It’s also why Australia has a law to protect your teeth and gums, which states that no more than 6% of hydrogen peroxide can be sold outside of a professional dental office.
Although uncommon, other risks include teeth have dehydrated and the gums are irritated. This is usually because patients want their teeth to be whiter than what is possible for them, without understanding that the whitening process can only improve the lightening effect up to a certain shade.
Another risk is a relapse of discolouration, which often occurs because patients go back to drinking coffee, eating curry or partaking in other bad habits. Best way to manage this risk is to use a recommended whitening toothpaste or mouthwash by a dental professional and maintain good oral hygiene and diet. Doing so will prolong the results and mean you’ll only need a whitening ‘touch up’ every six months to a year.
Cost
The average cost of most whitening treatments ranges between $200 – $800. However, this can vary depending on the method you choose and how severe or complicated the whitening process needs to be. At Oralux Dental, we will discuss all your options with you and remain open and upfront about the price to ensure you’re not caught out with unexpected costs.
